San Luis and Stations of the Cross
I got an opportunity to go do an overnight shoot in the San Luis area with Mike Pach of 3 Peak Photography & Designs (FB) and Don Savage of Don Savage Photography.(FB). It is always a great time shooting with this duo.
The trip was close to three hours once you factor in that the melting snow and ice was beginning to freeze back up through the pass.
Stations of the Cross Shrine
While exploring around the valley looking for spots to photograph the night’s sky, we stopped at the Stations of the Cross Shrine to have a look around. After doing so, we decided we’d come back after sunset and get some night shots of the place.
I shot a few images of a few of the stations just before sundown.
Being unfamiliar with the shrine, I walked around and absorbed the sights all the while trying to shoot for the light that was now and plan for the light, or lack thereof, that would be later.
Images from around San Luis Valley just after sunset.
After leaving the shrine, we left to grab a bite at the All-Gon Restaurant in Fort Garland, CO and plan the night’s coming shoot. With our bellies full and my coffee topped off, we headed out into the night in an effort to record the skies of such a dark area in Colorado. Hopefully, it can stay as dark as it is as it sets up nicely for night sky photography.
I took a few images using the small LED light bank that I brought. I snapped my small tripod that I usually use for the light bank, so I had to hand hold which ruined a bit of the shadowing on the sculptures. Maybe I’ll go back sometime and redo this shoot. By the way, Huberto Maestas was the sculptor for all of the statues.
