Sunset/Moonrise in Victor
I spent last evening scouting Fall colors and shooting both sunset and moonrise with Dave Bowers (Red Cliff Photography) and Don Savage (Don Savage Photography) in the Victor, CO area. After shooting pockets of Fall color, we headed towards some pockets of old mining equipment.
The colors in the area were definitely on their way out. Regardless, this trip was very nice if nothing else but a scouting trip for the 2021 Fall season.
Sunset was fast approaching, so we set up near the goldmine outside of Victor, CO. In the image above, I hoped to capture the glow of the sunset reflecting off of the old mining equipment as the sun prepared to nestle itself below the horizon behind me.
Looking in the opposite direction of the old mining equipment gave me a scene of the setting sun behind the rolling hills and the distant mountains. The cool wildfire smoke filled air, along with a rising layer of mist, gave for a soft appearance that I rather liked.
Just after sunset, I set up for moonrise. With all of the best technology available, I set up my composition. Imagine if you will… A wondering path coming from the bottom righthand corner of the scene heading off into the distance towards the old mining equipment on the horizon with the moon rising above the scene lighting up the path. Yeah, that was the plan and like Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Well, I got punched in the mouth…by an evergreen tree.
The moon rose just a tad to the right of where I had it predicted. With that, It rose behind an evergreen. I, unfortunately, had to break composition late into the evening. With that, the lower light images I’d taken, to put together with the moonrise, were useless. The image above is the result of my poor planning. Always learning…
Always turn around and look behind you in at least two things in life: hiking and landscape photography. One last look back before leaving the area provided this scene. Great way to end the evening’s shoot!
