The Image

The Evening Prior:
I arrived at the trail-head to Mesa Arch the evening prior to this sunrise. I had heard that the area around the arch would be shoulder to shoulder with people come the morning; I wondered what to expect when I got to the parking lot. Would there be a lot of cars already there? Would it be empty? Pulling in, at around 11 p.m., I found an empty lot minus one single car. Maybe there'd be only a few people at the Arch in the morning and I'd get to shoot the sunrise from a multitude of locations.

The Morning Of:
When I woke to my 0430 alarm, I could see that other cars had parked overnight. I could also see that there were headlamps moving around one of the cars. Quickly, I got up, got ready, grabbed my gear, and headed for the trail. I walked in with six other people wondering how many were already at the site.

Walking up to the Arch, I was pleasantly surprised that we were the first ones there! None of us had ever been before, so we lit the arch up with our headlamps and tried to survey the area. I got an app out that helped me predict where the sun would rise and we each picked out a location while trying to stay out of view of each other's cameras. With our positions all set, we quietly waited for both the morning's sun while also curiously awaiting any additional photographers that might show up.

Well, they showed up. There were probably 150-200 people surrounding the arch by the time the sun rose. Heck, there were people showing up well after the sun had already risen. A couple of times we had to speak up a bit in an effort to get fellow photographers out of view of our lenses, but all in all, it went quite well.

Setting up in the dark, well before sunrise, made actually knowing what you were photographing a bit difficult. Overall, I am pleased with the shot I got that morning, tho I will be going back. My road-trip was about four days long. I could have spent that entire four days here in Canyonlands National Park. I will be back.....!
